VICTORIA MATA

faith-based therapist in North Carolina
Counseling can be a vulnerable experience. My desire and commitment is to foster an environment that invites the complexities of life, vulnerability and honesty, curiosity and care, safety and warmth, and some humor to help us along the way. Healing and growth can be life-long journeys, and I hope to have the honor of joining yours.
Why are you a mental health counselor?

My father used to say, “you don’t know a stranger.”

It’s true - people were an early passion of mine. Making the world a better place for people was also an early passion. After completing my bachelors, I served the college students of my Alma Mater as a campus minister guiding individuals in their journey of faith. With an eagerness to better understand the innerworkings of healing and health, I then set out for a Master’s degree to study the intersection of theology and psychology. My perspectives on the good and the hard of being human were broadened and my awareness of the many resources God has given for wellness was increased.

What’s your story in the field?

Having worked with men, women, teenagers, groups and couples, I have a deepened well of wisdom and tools from which to draw for my clients. From my beginning clinical days in 2018 working with a non-profit in a local jail system to later joining a group Christian practice, I received a variety of experiences that evolved me into a better counselor and a better person. This evolution only continued when I became a mother in 2020. A mom of two now, I am more aware of the burgeoning needs of the maternal community and want to see enhanced mental health for our mothers of the world; Life experiences change us.

Who do you mostly see?

Women, mothers, and young adults.

What is therapy like with you?

With years of experience in various faith-based contexts, my philosophy about helping is that we need to factor in the "whole person" - mind, body, and spirit. As a Christian therapist, specifically, I offer the options of incorporating spiritual conversations, values, and practices into the therapeutic process. I also offer interventions to get in touch with your divinely-made body, unleashing healing and change in very physical ways. We want to hold space for all of you.
